Caroline Schumm is a contemporary artist based in southern Germany, living and working beneath the ruins of an old castle. Her practice is rooted in memory, emotion and color, with a focus on layered textures that evoke nostalgia, romance and personal transformation. She combines aged tactile surfaces with bold, modern color contrasts, creating a dialogue between past and present.

Caroline’s still life series Whispers of The Past explores intimate, quiet moments -objects and scenes that carry emotional weight beyond their surface. These works reflect lived experience, longing and the subtle resilience that emerges through becoming.

She is married and a mother of two daughters. In 2025, she began teaching art alongside her artistic practice and works as a freelance artist, continuing to develop a body of work that is deeply personal yet open to shared reflection.

A little more about me

Although I have always loved art, my creative spark returned in my mid-twenties in 2015, gradually developing into a committed artistic practice. In the spring of 2023, I joined the Mastery Program at the Milan Art Institute to deepen my skills and expand my visual language.

I love to think of the word “Remembrance” in my paintings. Nostalgia and romance are big themes as well as deeper meanings and so visual storytelling. I choose to work in the direction of abstract realism with my own reimagined rococo spirit.

I have always been drawn to a wabi-sabi aesthetic, aged textures, imperfect surfaces that show the traces of time. The idea of “imperfect” is more authentic than modern flat surfaces that lack originality has always intrigued me.

I love color especially vibrant colors with rich hues. I feel the need to bring back color to this world.

Fun Fact: Many of my compositions include personal objects such as my late Oma’s porcelain or flowers from my own garden. It’s very important to me that I create my own references when I can and photograph them.
